Palliative medicine unit (UPE)

General

Since 2001 there is a Palliative Medicine Unit (PMU) at the University Hospital of Graz. The PMU is associated with the Department of Oncology of the University Clinic of Internal Medicine, Graz and headed by Univ.-Prof. Dr. Hellmut Samonigg
The objective of our treatment is to relieve pain and improve the quality of life by taking into consideration  the physical, psychological, social, spiritual and cultural dimensions of the disease in life and death. But we will only achieve this goal if we work as a team.
In addition to the treatment of patients also the education of students and palliative medical research takes place at the PMU.

What can we offer?

  • The treatment of severe and encumbering symptoms like pain, shortness of breath, nausea, and others.
  • Special nursing measures
  • Support in case of psychological and social strain
  • Support in case of spiritual questions
  • Assistance in organizing in-home nursing care in close cooperation with all medical attendants
  • Assistance in organizing visits to patients in their homes by people in an honorary capacity in cooperation with the Styrian Hospice Society
  • Provide the opportunity of continuing training and education in the fields of nursing and medicine and to teach palliative medicine and do research in this field.

The aim is to

  • stabilize the disease
  • release patients to their domestic environment
