When a person becomes afflicted with cancer this usually leads to massive changes in his/her life. As a result, both patients and their families will be exposed to difficult situations and heavy burdens that will be expressed in various forms such as: fear, preoccupation, dejectedness, depression, helplessness / powerlessness, anger / aggravation / huffishness, shame, insecurity, strain and stress, uneasiness, mood swings, uncertainty, sleep disorders, teariness, concentration problems, inability to communicate, isolation, sexual problems, side effects of therapy, pain
So for cancer patients, their relatives and risk groups psycho-oncology is a supportive form of treatment integrated in the medical care program at the Department of Oncology.
We offer specific psycho-oncological care for all our patients and their relatives:
- single counseling & -psychotherapy sessions
- single counseling & -psychotherapy sessions
- counseling for relatives
- crisis intervention
- information
For this purpose we apply clinically-psycologocical and psycho-therapeutic methods of treatment such as behavior-therapeutic measures, existence analysis, systemic measures, and different relaxation exercises ( progressive muscle relaxation after Jacobson, autogenic training, visualization, imagination,…).
The patient training is based on an internationally recognized training program which will take place oncce a week for a period of eight weeks. In the course of these two-hours lasting encounters different occupational groups (physicians, psychologists, dietitians, physiotherapists, etc.) will tell you all about cancer so you will be able to use this knowledge actively.
Psycho-oncological treatment focuses on minimizing psychological, physical and social pressure of patients and their relatives by means of:
- reduction of psychological strain
- getting to know new possibilities of how to handle the disease
- overcoming fear
- discovering and promoting one’s abilities and strong points
- promoting health behavior
- strengthening self-esteem
- new orientation
- reducing possible side effects of chemotherapy and other therapies
- pain relief / better sleep
- concentration improvement
- relief for partnership and family

Patient training
This patient training is based on an internationally acknowledged program which will take place once a week over a period of eight weeks. The meetings last approx. two hours and representatives of different professions (physicians, psychologists, dietologists, physiotherapists, etc.) will inform patients about cancer in general so they know how to deal with it.
At the outpatient clinic and at the ward we are here for you from Monday through Friday between 08:00 and 16:00 hrs. If you are interested in psycho-oncological treatment or detailed information, respectively, please contact us directly by phone or email or through your attending physician or nursing staff, who will contact us.
